The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the safe release of three female students abducted from Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University of Agriculture in Makurdi. The students were kidnapped on February 25, 2025, while returning from a late-night study session on campus.
The announcement was made in a news flash shared by the Nigerian Television Authority on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday.
In response to the abduction, university authorities swiftly implemented a one-week mid-semester break to address growing security concerns. An internal memo titled “Security Situation on Campus,” issued a day after the incident, outlined the decision and was signed by the university’s Registrar, Dr. John David.
The case drew widespread attention, with the National Association of Nigerian Students and Nigeria’s Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, urging authorities to ramp up efforts for the students’ safe return.
While the specifics surrounding their release remain undisclosed, the news has brought much-needed relief to the university community and the families of the students.
