Dr. Emeka Kalu, Director-General of Global Initiatives for Good Governance, has called for calm and restraint amid the ongoing political turmoil in Rivers State. He urged all parties involved to put the state’s interest above personal or political ambitions.

In a statement issued in Lagos, Kalu advised stakeholders to wait for the final court ruling on the status of the 27 lawmakers accused of defection, rather than resorting to actions that could escalate tensions.

He commended Governor Siminalayi Fubara for maintaining a measured approach, stating, “The governor has encouraged the people to remain calm and await the certified true copy of the Supreme Court verdict before taking any further steps in the best interest of Rivers State.”

Kalu also warned against any attempts to impeach the governor, labeling such moves as divisive and detrimental to peace. “Those secretly plotting impeachment should set aside their personal interests and embrace cooperation for the state’s progress,” he cautioned.

Additionally, he emphasized the need to uphold judicial integrity, warning that political interference in the judiciary could erode democracy. “A compromised judiciary paves the way for political opportunism at the expense of the people,” he said.

Kalu urged President Bola Tinubu to step in once again to ensure a swift and just resolution, stressing that the crisis, if mishandled, could pose a significant threat to Nigeria’s democracy.
