The power struggle in the Lagos State House of Assembly has escalated to the courtroom as lawmakers arrived at the State High Court in Ikeja for a crucial hearing on the embattled speakership of Mudashiru Obasa.
Obasa, who was removed as Speaker by 36 lawmakers on January 13, 2025, over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office, is challenging his ousting in court. The case also involves Princess Mojisola Meranda, who was initially elected as his replacement but later stepped down in deference to the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership.
When the case was first heard on February 20, top legal heavyweights entered the fray. Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Afolabi Fashanu represented Obasa, while prominent lawyers Femi Falana, Muiz Banire, Olu Daramola, Dada Awosika, and Tayo Oyetibo appeared for various factions of the Assembly.
Justice Yetunde Pinheiro, in a previous ruling, ordered that all members of the Lagos House of Assembly be joined as parties in the suit. The case has now been adjourned to March 7 for the hearing of pending preliminary objections.
As the legal battle unfolds, all eyes are on the courtroom, with the outcome set to shape the future of leadership in the Lagos Assembly.
