The Ogun State Police Command has arrested three individuals in connection with the tragic electrocution of 23-year-old apprentice Jonathan Emmanuel at a welding workshop in the Asimolowo area of Ifo.
The suspects, identified as welder Oladokun Johnson, truck driver Azeez Salami, and truck owner Olaleye Kamaldeen, were apprehended following a report made by Emmanuel’s father, Mr. Abah Emmanuel. On Thursday, March 6, 2024, Mr. Emmanuel alerted the Ifo Divisional Police Headquarters about the tragic incident.
According to the report, Salami, the truck driver and Emmanuel’s employer, informed Mr. Emmanuel that his son had been electrocuted. The police immediately responded, dispatching officers to the scene. After providing assistance in evacuating the victim, they rushed him to the General Hospital, where he was sadly confirmed dead by the attending doctor.
Ogun State Police Spokesperson, CSP Omolola Odutola, shared further details in a statement to the press on Friday. Preliminary investigations revealed that the incident occurred when Oladokun Johnson, the welder, was working on a container at his workshop using a welding machine with an exposed live wire. At the time of the electrocution, truck owner Olaleye Kamaldeen had arrived with a minibus carrying truck rims for offloading.
While rolling one of the rims toward the truck, the rim made contact with the exposed wire, resulting in Emmanuel’s fatal electrocution.
Following the incident, the police recovered the welding machine and the exposed wire as evidence. The three arrested individuals are currently in police custody, and the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCID) for further investigation and potential prosecution.
The Ogun State Police Command has issued a strong reminder to business owners and artisans to prioritize workplace safety to prevent such tragic accidents.
