Liverpool overcame a shock setback to defeat Southampton 3-1 at Anfield on Saturday, extending their Premier League lead to a commanding 16 points. Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez stole the show, turning the game around after the struggling Saints had taken a surprise lead.

Southampton’s Will Smallbone stunned the Anfield crowd just before halftime, capitalizing on a mix-up between Virgil van Dijk and Alisson. But Liverpool, as they’ve done all season, found another gear.

Second-Half Comeback Sparks Title Charge

Arne Slot’s halftime substitutions made an instant impact. Alexis Mac Allister, Harvey Elliott, and Andrew Robertson injected fresh energy into the team, and within minutes, the comeback was in full swing.

In the 51st minute, Luis Diaz created the opening Liverpool needed, delivering a perfect cross that Nunez converted with confidence. Moments later, Nunez won a penalty after being clipped in the box, and Salah stepped up to blast the Reds into the lead.

Salah wasn’t done yet. A late handball from Southampton’s Yukinari Sugawara handed Liverpool another penalty, and the Egyptian King made no mistake, bringing his tally to 32 goals in all competitions this season.

Champions-Elect?

With just nine league games left and only one defeat all season, Liverpool is on the brink of a record-equalling 20th English title. Arsenal, in second place, has two games in hand, but Liverpool’s relentless march looks unstoppable.

The Reds are also eyeing a historic treble. After edging PSG in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie, they’ll look to finish the job on Tuesday. Then, a Wembley showdown with Newcastle in the League Cup final awaits.

For Southampton, the reality is bleak. Stuck at the bottom and running out of time, they’re inching closer to a historically poor season.

But for Liverpool, the dream season continues, and Anfield is already singing in anticipation of another Premier League crown.
