As the world marks International Women’s Day (IWD) on March 8, 2025, Nigeria’s Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy, Barrister Hannatu Musa Musawa, has paid tribute to Nigerian women, recognizing their resilience, creativity, and immense contributions to society.
Musawa, in a heartfelt message, emphasized the importance of this year’s theme, “Invest in Women. Accelerate Action,” urging individuals, organizations, and communities to commit to empowering women and breaking systemic barriers that hinder their progress.
“This day is a reminder of the incredible role Nigerian women play in shaping our society. Their strength and creativity drive innovation and cultural transformation,” Musawa stated.
Nigerian Women Shine on the Global Stage
The Minister also celebrated the achievements of outstanding Nigerian women recently honored at the 2025 Forbes Women Africa Awards in South Africa. Among them were:
Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Tiwa Savage, globally acclaimed singer, who bagged the Media Icon Award and was named Forbes Woman Africa Changemaker of the Decade.
Arunma Oteh, OON, former Vice President of the World Bank, recognized for her trailblazing work in finance and leadership.
Other notable Nigerian honorees included:
Nissi Ogulu – Youth Icon Award
Hephzibah Akinwale – Next Generation Award

Musawa lauded their successes, stating, “These phenomenal women have made Nigeria proud on the global stage. Their achievements remind us that when women are empowered, societies thrive.”
She reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting and uplifting women in arts, culture, and the creative industries, while encouraging young women to keep pushing boundaries.
As Nigeria joins the world in celebrating IWD 2025, Musawa’s message is clear—empowering women isn’t just about equality; it’s about accelerating progress for all.
