In a major move to support family reunification, Canada has announced plans to accept up to 10,000 applications for the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) in 2025. This initiative allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents or grandparents for permanent residency.
Who Can Apply?
To qualify, sponsors must:
Be at least 18 years old
Meet the required income threshold
Commit to financially supporting their parents or grandparents
The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is overseeing the program, reinforcing Canada’s commitment to keeping families together.
Super Visa: A Flexible Alternative
For families looking for extended visits without permanent residency, the Super Visa remains an option. It allows parents and grandparents multiple entries over a 10-year period, with each stay lasting up to five years. IRCC has also eased health insurance requirements, making it more accessible.
Processing Times & Provincial Differences
PGP Visa Processing Times:
- Outside Quebec: Around 24 months
- Quebec Applicants: May take up to 48 months due to provincial requirements
Super Visa Insurance Updates:
- Applicants can now purchase insurance from approved international providers, not just Canadian companies.
- Must have private health insurance since they are not covered by provincial health plans.
For those planning shorter visits of six months or less, a standard visitor visa remains a viable option.
With this new development, Canada continues to strengthen its reputation as a top destination for family-friendly immigration policies.
