The political turmoil within the Lagos State House of Assembly took another dramatic twist as reinstated Speaker Mudashiru Obasa made a surprise move by changing the Assembly’s legal counsel in an ongoing court battle.

His unilateral decision on Monday sent shockwaves through the legislative house, further fueling tensions with the 35 lawmakers who had previously voted for his impeachment.

The case, which is being heard at the Ikeja High Court, was adjourned by Justice Yetunde Pinheiro to March 17 after new applications were filed by both parties. Obasa is challenging his removal from office on January 13, 2025, which was based on allegations of fraud, high-handedness, abuse of office, and gross misconduct.

Obasa’s lead counsel, Afolabi Fasanu (SAN), defended the move, stating that new filings were necessary to address disputes raised in court last Friday, particularly regarding Obasa’s whereabouts at the time of his impeachment.

However, Femi Falana (SAN), representing the 35 lawmakers, slammed the Speaker’s move as illegal. “A plaintiff cannot impose a lawyer on the defendants. The 35 lawmakers have chosen our legal team, and we are carrying out their instructions,” he stated.

The battle for control of the Lagos Assembly remains heated. Obasa’s removal in January led to the brief tenure of then-Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda, who later stepped down on March 3, allowing Obasa’s controversial reinstatement.
