ABUJA — President Bola Tinubu has defended his decision to remove fuel subsidies, stating that the move was necessary to secure a brighter future for Nigeria’s youth and generations yet unborn.
Speaking at the inauguration of the National Youth Congress Planning Committee at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Tinubu assured young Nigerians that his policies were driven by a vision for long-term prosperity.
“Every decision I’ve made is about securing tomorrow,” he said. “Removing oil subsidy is not just an economic move—it’s about protecting the future. If we invest in infrastructure and empower our people, we will build a nation where young Nigerians won’t feel the need to seek opportunities elsewhere.”
Addressing concerns about economic challenges, the President acknowledged the rough start but expressed optimism. “At first, it seemed uncertain, but now the economy has turned a corner. Prices are stabilizing, investor confidence is rising, and technology is advancing. The future is in your hands,” he told the committee members.
Tinubu encouraged young Nigerians to actively participate in governance, urging them to voice their concerns and offer solutions. “Look me in the face and tell me what’s wrong. I will listen, and we’ll implement policies that ensure Nigeria thrives,” he said.
The newly inaugurated committee will play a key role in organizing the upcoming National Youth Congress, which aims to amplify youth engagement in national development. Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to listening and integrating young people’s ideas into governance.
Executive Director of Yiaga Africa and committee member, Samson Itodo, praised Tinubu for recognizing the role of youth in shaping Nigeria’s future.
Tinubu ended on a lighthearted note, expressing admiration for the youth: “I can’t be young again—maybe in my next life—but I envy all of you. Seize this moment and build a great nation.”
