Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has strongly condemned the killing of three Civil Protection Guards by suspected armed herdsmen in Gwer West Local Government Area (LGA), an incident that sparked a violent protest in Naka on Tuesday.
The slain guards were reportedly attacked while on duty in On-MbaAondo, Tsambe-Mbesev Ward. When their bodies were brought to Naka for burial, outraged youths stormed the streets, decrying the relentless attacks in the region. The demonstration quickly turned destructive, with protesters torching the local government secretariat, the palace of the Gwer West Traditional Council chairman, a senator’s hotel, and several other properties.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, Governor Alia denounced the attack, calling it a direct assault on peace and security in Benue.
“We understand the deep frustration and anger fueling this unrest, but the destruction of our own assets only derails our efforts to restore peace and security,” Alia stated.
He urged security forces to ramp up efforts in tracking down the perpetrators, vowing that justice would be served.
“The safety of our people is non-negotiable, and we will not rest until those responsible for this heinous act are held accountable,” he assured.
Governor Alia reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening security and protecting communities from further violence, calling on residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with authorities.
“In these challenging times, we must stand together, reject violence, and pursue lasting peace for Benue State,” he added.
