Four years after the shocking death of football legend Diego Maradona, seven medical professionals who oversaw his final days are now on trial in Argentina, accused of criminal negligence. The case, which has gripped the football world, could see the defendants face between eight and 25 years in prison if found guilty of “homicide with possible intent.”
The Icon’s Final Days
Maradona, revered for leading Argentina to victory in the 1986 World Cup, passed away on November 25, 2020, at the age of 60. He was recovering from brain surgery for a blood clot at the time, after years of struggling with addiction. His sudden death sent the nation into mourning, with tens of thousands lining up to pay their respects at the presidential palace during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, a 2021 medical report suggested that his passing could have been prevented with proper medical care. Prosecutors argue that the medical team’s decision to keep Maradona in home care was “reckless” and “totally deficient,” alleging he was abandoned to suffer a prolonged and agonizing death.
Who’s on Trial?
Among the accused are Maradona’s neurosurgeon, psychiatrist, psychologist, a medical coordinator, nursing coordinator, a doctor, and his night nurse. The day nurse, who found him lifeless, has requested a separate trial.
The night nurse previously admitted noticing “warning signs” but claimed he was instructed not to wake Maradona. Additionally, leaked audio and text messages allegedly reveal that the medical team worked to prevent Maradona’s daughters from intervening, fearing financial repercussions.
A Fight for Justice
The trial, taking place in Buenos Aires’ San Isidro suburb, is expected to run until July, with over 100 witnesses set to testify, including members of Maradona’s family and medical professionals who treated him throughout his life.
In Buenos Aires’ La Paternal neighborhood, where Maradona first made his mark playing for Argentinos Juniors in the 1970s, graffiti reading “Justice for Diego!” has appeared on walls, echoing the sentiment of fans demanding accountability.
“All of society needs to know the truth—who abandoned him, who failed him,” said pensioner Hilda Pereira, her voice trembling. “Maradona did not deserve to die alone.”
While the accused deny responsibility, many are left wondering: Will justice be served for one of football’s greatest icons?
