The House of Representatives has urged the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to order internet service providers (ISPs) to block all websites hosting pornographic content across Nigeria.
During Tuesday’s plenary in Abuja, the motion, titled “Need to Block Internet Websites Hosting Pornographic Contents and Sanction Defaulting Internet Service Providers (ISPs),” was moved by Rep. Dalhatu Tafoki. He emphasized that the increasing access to explicit content online is becoming a major concern, yet no concrete measures have been put in place to curb it.
Tafoki pointed out that Nigeria is a country with strong moral and religious values, and the major faiths practiced in the nation condemn indecent exposure and immoral content. He also cited examples of countries in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East that have enacted laws restricting access to such materials.
Expressing concern over the impact of pornography, the lawmaker highlighted its potential to harm family values, promote unrealistic expectations in relationships, fuel promiscuity, and even contribute to addiction and behavioral issues. He referenced warnings from experts in psychology and sociology about the negative effects of such content on mental and social well-being.
Following the debate, the House directed the NCC to enforce relevant provisions of the Nigerian Communications Act and the National Information Technology Development Act against any ISPs that fail to comply. It also mandated its Committees on Communications and Legislative Compliance to oversee the implementation of the directive and report back within four weeks.
This move signals a renewed effort by lawmakers to regulate digital content and uphold moral standards in Nigeria.
