President Bola Tinubu has renamed the University of Abuja after Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon. This decision was made during a meeting of the Federal Executive Council, and is aimed at recognizing General Gowon’s contributions to Nigeria’s unity and development.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Education, the renaming is a testament to General Gowon’s selfless leadership and commitment to national development. The newly renamed Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja, will continue to provide quality education and research opportunities to students.
General Gowon, who served as Head of State from 1966 to 1975, played a crucial role in shaping Nigeria’s history. His leadership during the country’s tumultuous years has been widely praised, and his commitment to national development has left a lasting legacy.
The renaming of the university is expected to inspire future generations of Nigerians to emulate General Gowon’s selfless leadership and commitment to national development.
In a related development, President Tinubu has also directed the Federal Government to take over Nok University, Kachia, Kaduna State, and transform it into the Federal University of Applied Sciences, Kachia.
The new university is expected to focus on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education, and will provide expanded access to quality education in the region.
The takeover of the university follows a Federal High Court ruling that ordered the final forfeiture of the privately owned institution to the government.
The decisions were made during a meeting of the Federal Executive Council, and are aimed at promoting education and national development.
