Former U.S. President Donald Trump has declared his intention to purchase a brand-new Tesla to show solidarity with billionaire Elon Musk, whom he praised for “putting it on the line” to support America.
Taking to Truth Social, Trump slammed what he called a “radical left” boycott against Tesla, describing Musk as a “truly great American” unfairly targeted for his political stance.
“I’m going to buy a brand-new Tesla tomorrow morning as a show of confidence and support for Elon Musk,” Trump announced, adding, “Why should he be punished for putting his tremendous skills to work to help MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN???”
Musk, who has aligned closely with Trump in recent months, thanked the former president in a post on his platform, X.
However, Tesla’s stock has taken a hit amid growing backlash against Musk’s political affiliations. The company’s shares plummeted over 15% on Monday, part of a broader market slump triggered by concerns over Trump’s trade policies.
Tesla’s European sales have also nosedived, with Germany—its biggest EU market—seeing a staggering 76% drop year-on-year. Meanwhile, Tesla owners frustrated with Musk’s political ties have begun slapping bumper stickers on their cars reading: “Bought before Elon went crazy.”
As tensions mount, Tesla has also faced arson attacks in France and vandalism in the U.S., fueling speculation that Musk’s deepening involvement in politics is having financial and reputational consequences for his businesses.
