The Nigerian government has reaffirmed its commitment to attracting hydrocarbon investments to tackle energy poverty while making it clear that Africa is not a significant contributor to global emissions.

Speaking at CERAWeek by S&P Global, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Energy, Olu Verheijen, emphasized that Africa accounts for only 3–4% of global greenhouse gas emissions—far less than heavy polluters like China and the U.S., which contribute nearly 40% combined.

At the session titled “Policy and People: Pathways to a Just Transition,” Verheijen underscored Nigeria’s push for a fair energy transition, highlighting the “Decade of Gas” initiative, which prioritizes natural gas as a cleaner alternative to support economic growth.

“In Nigeria, we are creating an environment that fosters investment and ensures climate policies that are transparent and long-lasting,” she stated.

Verheijen also stressed the need for stronger regional collaboration to enhance Africa’s energy market, making it more attractive for investors.

“By integrating African markets and pooling resources, we can drive sustainable development while maintaining control of our energy future,” she added.

She further explained that even if Africa’s economy grows exponentially, it will remain a minor player in global emissions. Instead, major reductions must come from developed nations through energy diversification and advanced carbon-reduction technologies.

Nigeria, alongside other African nations, aims to strike a balance—harnessing natural resources to fuel economic growth while implementing climate-conscious solutions for long-term sustainability.
