Nigeria and Jamaica are set to review their Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) as both nations push for improved air connectivity.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, announced that a committee will be established to fast-track the process. This was revealed during a meeting with Jamaican Ambassador to Nigeria, Lincoln Downer, and his Consular, Andre Hibbert, in Abuja.
Ambassador Downer emphasized the need for direct flights between Nigeria and Jamaica, highlighting the growing demand for travel and Jamaican products in Nigeria. He also pointed out the increasing popularity of Nigerian culture—particularly Afrobeat and Nollywood—in Jamaica, reinforcing the need for stronger air links.
With Jamaica currently lacking a national carrier and relying on Trinidad and Tobago for air transport, Downer suggested integrating the BASA agreements between the three nations to bridge the gap.
In response, Keyamo welcomed the proposal, stating, “I am delighted to start the BASA arrangements. To ensure a swift resolution, we will set up a committee to expedite the process.” He also expressed his willingness to visit Jamaica personally to finalize the agreement.
The move is expected to enhance trade, tourism, and cultural exchange between both nations.
