Inter Milan and AC Milan have officially launched their bid to purchase the iconic San Siro site, taking a major step toward building a state-of-the-art stadium in the heart of Milan.
The two Italian giants submitted a feasibility study to local authorities, including an offer to buy the city-owned land, with the goal of finalizing the deal by July 2025. The proposed stadium is expected to seat over 70,000 fans, an increase from the initially planned 60,000 capacity.
“The proposal includes acquiring the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium (San Siro) and surrounding areas, along with a plan for constructing a modern stadium,” the clubs said in a joint statement.
Discussions with the Milan municipality are set to continue in the coming months, refining the details of the ambitious project. However, political opposition could pose a challenge, as city councillors are divided on the sale. Some argue that Mayor Giuseppe Sala is bypassing local democracy in his push to keep both clubs in Milan.
Fans are also voicing concerns over potential ticket price hikes, fearing that premium hospitality areas may replace affordable seating in the new stadium.
Construction would not begin until after the 2026 Winter Olympics, as the current San Siro is set to host the opening ceremony. With the future of Milan’s footballing heart at stake, all eyes are on the city council’s next move.
