A devastating tanker explosion at Otedola Bridge on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has left two people dead and five others injured, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed on Wednesday.
According to FRSC spokesperson Olusegun Ogungbemide, the crash, which occurred on Tuesday night, involved 11 people—all male. Sadly, two lost their lives, while five sustained injuries.
The explosion, triggered by brake failure in one of the vehicles, ignited a massive fire, engulfing 15 vehicles and causing widespread chaos and severe traffic congestion.
Emergency response teams, including firefighters and FRSC personnel, quickly arrived at the scene to contain the inferno and rescue victims.
FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed expressed deep concern over the incident, calling it preventable. He emphasized the need for strict adherence to safety regulations, particularly for vehicles carrying hazardous materials.
He urged fleet managers, vehicle owners, and drivers to ensure proper vehicle maintenance, warning that violators of road safety rules would face penalties under the National Road Traffic Regulations.
Mohammed reassured the public of FRSC’s commitment to road safety and urged citizens to report emergencies via the toll-free helpline: 122.
