Senate President Godswill Akpabio has warned that Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s actions could discourage politicians from appointing women to key positions in Nigeria.

During Tuesday’s plenary, Akpabio criticized Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP, Kogi Central) over her sexual harassment allegations against him, saying her approach has far-reaching consequences.

“She took this issue from the Senate to the courts, and then to the international stage before even allowing due process,” Akpabio said. He likened her actions to a scenario where U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris falsely accused President Joe Biden of harassment just for guiding her through the White House.

Despite his frustration, Akpabio urged politicians not to let one person’s actions affect opportunities for other women. “I have four daughters, and I want them and other women to still have chances in leadership.”

Senate Stands with Akpabio, Suspends Natasha

Following a heated session, the Senate unanimously passed a vote of confidence in Akpabio’s leadership and suspended Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months over misconduct.

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele dismissed claims that the Senate ignored allegations of harassment, stating that no official complaint had been submitted. Instead, the Ethics Committee only reviewed a petition concerning her alleged breach of Senate rules.

Akpabio further condemned Akpoti-Uduaghan for addressing the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in New York, where she alleged she was suspended for speaking out. “She has now externalized this matter, trying to embarrass Nigeria before the international community.”

What’s Next?

Despite the suspension, Akpoti-Uduaghan remains defiant, taking her case to the UN’s IPU, arguing that her suspension was politically motivated. Meanwhile, the Senate, now presided over by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, says it’s time to move on and focus on governance.

With the 2025 budget ahead, will this controversy fade away, or is there more drama brewing?
