The Rivers State House of Assembly has abruptly suspended all legislative activities indefinitely, throwing a wrench into Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s plans to present the 2025 budget.
Speaker Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule announced the indefinite adjournment during Friday’s plenary session in Port Harcourt. This decision comes just a day after Governor Fubara formally notified the Assembly of his intention to present the state’s budget.
The budget presentation was originally slated for March 29, following a failed attempt on Wednesday when the Governor was reportedly locked out of the Assembly Complex.
Adding to the drama, the Assembly had previously issued a 48-hour ultimatum for the Governor to submit the budget, citing a recent Supreme Court ruling that mandated compliance.
With this latest twist, the state’s governance and financial planning hang in uncertainty, leaving many to question the real motives behind the Assembly’s sudden shutdown.
