In a decisive move to tackle rising security concerns, the Ijumu and Kabba-Bunu Local Government Councils in Kogi State have ordered the immediate closure of the Zango Cattle Markets in Iyara and Odolu.

The closures come in response to intelligence reports indicating that criminal elements, including kidnappers and bandits, have been using the markets as operational hubs. The decision follows similar shutdowns in other parts of the state, particularly in Kogi Central, which reportedly pushed these criminals to relocate to Iyara and Odolu.

Chairmen of the affected LGAs, Alh. Haruna Ibrahim (Ijumu) and Dare Zacchaeus (Kabba-Bunu), stated that Governor Ahmed Ododo directed them to take firm action against any activities that compromise security.

According to Ibrahim, security forces have been deployed to enforce the closure, ensuring that the markets remain shut until further notice. “The safety of our people and travelers is our top priority,” he emphasized.

Zacchaeus, on his part, warned against any attempts by displaced herders to settle in Kabba-Bunu, vowing stiff resistance and legal consequences. He also issued a stern warning to traditional rulers and area chiefs involved in selling land to unknown individuals, stating that such actions could lead to dethronement and prosecution.

Furthermore, any resident looking to sell property within Kabba-Bunu must now obtain approval from the council and provide detailed information on the buyer. Failure to comply could result in legal action for aiding and abetting criminal activities.

The government’s latest crackdown sends a strong message that security remains a top priority in Kogi State.
