A serving corps member in Lagos State has raised alarm over threats from the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) after she criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration in a viral social media video.

In a heartfelt TikTok video shared via the handle @talktoraye, the young woman broke down in tears while lamenting the skyrocketing cost of living, questioning what the government was doing to address inflation.

Expressing her frustration, she said, “I don’t know if there has been a president as terrible as you, but you are such a terrible president.” She detailed how the prices of essential goods, including eggs, had doubled in just weeks, making it increasingly difficult for her to survive on her NYSC allowance.

According to her, “Everything is expensive. I remember when a crate of eggs was N800. Now, it’s N6,500. Bills are piling up—security fees, NEPA charges—all doubling. Even taking an Uber now costs N25,000! Lagos stinks, and nobody is doing anything about it.”

However, just 24 hours after posting the video, she shared another clip revealing that NYSC officials had started calling her, demanding that she take the video down.

In the recording, an official can be heard asking, “Are you normal? Keep quiet and bring down the video you posted.”

The corps member alleged that multiple NYSC officials had pressured her to stop criticizing the government, with some warning her to delete the video immediately.

Efforts to get an official response from the NYSC’s acting spokesperson, Caroline Embu, were unsuccessful as she did not respond to calls at the time of this report.

The incident has since sparked online reactions, with many Nigerians debating the right to free speech versus the consequences of publicly criticizing the government.
