Former England footballer John Fashanu has launched a £100,000 lawsuit against the Nigerian police, accusing them of unlawful arrest, intimidation, and violating his fundamental rights.

The ex-Wimbledon striker, 62, was arrested in connection with a heated land dispute involving investors who allegedly paid over £500,000 for his 22-acre property. The controversy escalated when Fashanu confronted contractors building a fence on the disputed land, leading to his arrest on charges of criminal conspiracy, threat to life, and trespassing.

Recounting his ordeal, Fashanu claims he, his wife Vivian, and their lawyer were unlawfully detained for three hours on December 16, describing the experience as “inhumane and unconstitutional.” His lawyer, Mr. Chigbu, confirmed that all three have since been granted bail.

The former footballer, known for his key role in Wimbledon’s iconic 1988 FA Cup victory, insists his rights were grossly violated and is now seeking justice through legal action.
