Lagos residents, brace for major traffic disruptions as the state government announces the closure of Independence/Mekwen Bridge (inbound Marina/CMS) for emergency repairs from March 19 to May 26, 2025.
According to Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the closure will affect motorists traveling from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) through Bonny Camp Bridge to Independence Bridge, as well as the Bonny Camp Underpass Bridge service lane inbound Independence Bridge. However, the service lane from Ahmadu Bello Way to Ozumba Mbadiwe will remain open.
To ease movement, the government has provided alternative routes:
Heading to Victoria Island from Ahmadu Bello Way? Use Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue → Akin Adesola Street → Falomo Roundabout → Obafemi Awolowo Road → Ring Road.
Going from Ahmadu Bello to 3rd Mainland Bridge? Take Ozumba Mbadiwe → Akin Adesola → Alfred Rewane Road → Osborne Road → Ring Road.
Traveling from Ahmadu Bello to Inner Marina/CMS? Divert via Ozumba Mbadiwe → Akin Adesola → Falomo Roundabout → Obafemi Awolowo Road → J.K. Randle Road/King George V Road.
Coming from Inner Marina/CMS to Ahmadu Bello Way? Traffic will flow normally.
Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will be on the ground to manage the situation. Motorists are urged to exercise patience as these repairs, handled by the Federal Ministry of Works, aim to improve road conditions.
Plan your trips accordingly!
