Senator Ned Nwoko has called on the Nigerian Senate to remain resolute in the face of what he describes as “emotional blackmail” and social media outrage over the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

Addressing the controversy, Nwoko emphasized that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension had nothing to do with her petition submission but was due to her conduct on the Senate floor. He warned that allowing emotions to dictate decisions would turn the Senate into a chaotic arena.

“The Senate is not a noisy town hall; it operates by clear rules. Senator Natasha was sanctioned for her conduct, not for presenting a petition,” Nwoko said.

He also criticized Natasha’s husband, Chief Emmanuel Uduaghan, for escalating tensions rather than working behind the scenes to resolve the issue.

The rift began over a routine seat reassignment, which Natasha allegedly refused to accept, leading to an altercation where she was seen shouting, “I am not scared of you!” The Ethics Committee later found her behavior disruptive, recommending her six-month suspension.

Nwoko dismissed claims of gender suppression, stating that the Senate has always upheld discipline irrespective of gender. He also refuted the notion that the Senate deliberated on sexual harassment allegations, asserting that such claims should be addressed by the courts, not the legislature.

Meanwhile, Natasha remains banned from the National Assembly premises, with her salaries and allowances suspended—unless she tenders an apology within her suspension period.

With the 10th Senate embroiled in drama, will Natasha bow to pressure or fight till the end?
