A member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Ushie Uguamaye, popularly known as Raye, has issued a heartfelt apology after sparking controversy by calling Lagos a “smelling state.”
Raye had shared a TikTok video criticizing President Bola Tinubu over the country’s economic struggles while also lamenting the environmental conditions of Nigeria’s bustling megacity. The video quickly went viral, drawing widespread reactions—including from NYSC officials.
However, in an Instagram post on Monday, Raye expressed regret over her choice of words, acknowledging that her statement may have offended Lagos residents. She explained that as a newcomer to the city, her observations were personal experiences rather than an attempt to disrespect its people.
“If my words triggered emotions or came across as offensive, I sincerely apologize,” she wrote. “I never intended to talk down on Lagos or its people.”
She further clarified that the viral video was part of her 30-day “rant challenge”, an initiative aimed at raising awareness about Nigeria’s social and economic struggles. Her goal, she said, was to start conversations on the hardships young Nigerians face—especially regarding financial difficulties and work-life balance.
“I work over 45 hours a week and should be able to afford hanging out with friends on weekends—but I can’t. And I know I’m not alone in this struggle,” she stated.
While Raye admitted that her language choice may have been insensitive, she urged Nigerians to stay focused on demanding better living conditions rather than getting distracted by viral controversies.
Her apology has since sparked mixed reactions online, with some supporting her call for better governance, while others believe her initial comments were reckless and unnecessary.
