A fire outbreak on the Trans-Niger Delta Pipeline (TNP) sent panic through parts of Rivers State on Monday night, but authorities have assured residents that the situation is under control.

The Rivers State Police Command confirmed the incident on Tuesday, revealing that the facility, operated by Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), had been shut down as a precaution.

While the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, police have arrested two individuals for questioning as part of an ongoing investigation into possible sabotage.

What Happened?

According to police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko, security operatives on a routine patrol noticed the fire near the border of Kpor and Bodo communities and immediately alerted Shell officials.

“The company initiated necessary safety protocols, including shutting down the affected pipeline. Thanks to the swift response, the situation is now under control, and there is no further threat to residents or the environment,” she stated.

However, authorities have not confirmed whether the fire was caused by an explosion, a pipeline spill, or militant activity—a common concern in the oil-rich Niger Delta.

Ongoing Investigation & Arrests

To uncover the true cause of the fire, police have launched a thorough investigation.

“Two individuals have been taken in for questioning as part of efforts to determine if this was an act of sabotage,” Iringe-Koko confirmed.

She reassured residents that law enforcement is working tirelessly to maintain peace and security, urging the public to remain calm and vigilant.

“The Command is committed to identifying and bringing criminal elements to justice,” she added.

With pipeline fires often linked to oil theft, sabotage, or technical failures, the outcome of this probe could have far-reaching implications for Nigeria’s oil industry and national security.
