A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State, led by Mr. Nname Ewor, has strongly opposed the impeachment notice served to Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy by the Rivers State House of Assembly.
Speaking at a media briefing in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, Ewor condemned the move, arguing that it was not in line with the Supreme Court’s February 28 ruling. He called on the Martins Amaewule-led Assembly to prioritize peace and allow for the full implementation of the court’s decision.
“Impeachment was never part of the judgment, and the House should not consider it at this time, especially when the governor is taking steps to implement the ruling,” Ewor stated.
He urged Governor Fubara to expedite the implementation of the judgment, particularly in ensuring stability at the local government level by organizing elections following the dissolution of former council chairmen and councillors.
“We urge you to fully implement the Supreme Court judgment and conduct local government elections in line with your recent dissolution of the previous council officials,” he said.
Ewor also encouraged the governor to remain focused on re-presenting the 2025 budget, despite the initial resistance from lawmakers.
“We look forward to a positive outcome on the rescheduled March 19 budget presentation,” he added.
The PDP faction advised Fubara to dismiss the impeachment notice as a distraction and instead concentrate on fulfilling his mandate. He called on all political actors to embrace peace and work together to stabilize the state.
With political tensions running high in Rivers, all eyes are on March 19, when the budget presentation is expected to take place, potentially shaping the next chapter in the state’s unfolding political drama.
