As tensions escalate in Rivers State, President Bola Tinubu has convened a high-level security meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The closed-door session includes the Service Chiefs, Inspector-General of Police, and key government officials, signaling the gravity of the situation.
In attendance are Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, and Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu. It remains unclear if the National Assembly leaders are directly involved in discussions with security heads.
Also present are National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS) Adeola Ajayi, and Director General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) Mohammed Mohammed.
Though the official agenda has not been disclosed, the meeting follows a recent explosion along the Trans Niger Pipeline in Bodo, Rivers State, and ongoing political unrest in the region.
Adding to the tension, the youth wing of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) recently issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, demanding an apology over his comments on the Rivers political crisis. The deadline expired on Monday, intensifying speculations on the outcome of today’s emergency meeting.
