President Bola Tinubu has sworn in Vice Admiral Ibok-Étè Ibas (retd.) as the sole administrator of Rivers State, following the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and the state legislature.

The swearing-in ceremony, held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, was attended by top government officials, including Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila and Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi, SAN.

Fubara, Family Forced Out of Govt House

Shortly after Tinubu’s emergency rule declaration, Governor Fubara, his family, and security details vacated the Rivers State Government House in Port Harcourt late Tuesday night.

Security around the premises remained sparse on Wednesday afternoon, with two Armored Personnel Carriers (APCs) stationed outside. While normal activities continued across Port Harcourt, many residents were still coming to terms with the sudden takeover.

Who is Ibok Ibas?

Vice Admiral Ibok-Étè Ibas (retd.), a former Chief of Naval Staff under ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, has been tasked with overseeing governance in the oil-rich state for the next six months.

Political Turmoil Sparks Nationwide Outrage

Tinubu’s declaration of emergency rule, citing political instability and security threats, has sparked intense debate. Critics, including former Governor Rotimi Amaechi, argue that suspending elected officials is unconstitutional and sets a dangerous precedent.

With the House of Representatives and Senate yet to deliberate on the matter, all eyes are on the National Assembly as Nigeria watches the unfolding drama in Rivers State.
