In a sweeping crackdown on fake vehicle registration plates, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has reported a staggering 7,798 arrests in just two months. This aggressive push is part of a larger effort to address the growing concerns over counterfeit number plates, which pose significant risks to public safety and national security.
FRSC spokesperson Olusegun Ogungbemide confirmed the arrest figures in a statement released Wednesday, highlighting the issue’s urgency. “This crackdown on fake number plates has garnered widespread attention, and we’re pleased to announce that the National Assembly is fully behind our efforts,” Ogungbemide said.
The National Assembly’s endorsement resulted from mounting public concern over the dangers of fake number plates. During a recent meeting with FRSC leadership, Honourable Abiodun Adesida, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on FRSC, affirmed the Assembly’s commitment to backing the Corps’ efforts to curb this alarming trend. Adesida emphasized the importance of stricter laws to hold offenders accountable.
The ongoing initiative aims to combat the dangerous practice of using counterfeit number plates, which complicates law enforcement’s ability to track and identify vehicles linked to criminal activities. FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed, who attended the meeting with Adesida, provided detailed insight into the measures being taken, including the enhancement of the National Vehicle Identification Scheme Portal.
“Vehicles with fake registration numbers will not be permitted on Nigerian roads,” Mohammed declared. He also highlighted the growing trend of motorists using fake plates, which undermines road safety and hampers law enforcement’s efforts to tackle crime.
The FRSC’s crackdown on fake number plates is seen as a vital step in ensuring safer roads for all Nigerians. The Corps continues to urge vehicle owners to use legitimate registration plates and to report any instances of fraudulent plates to the nearest FRSC Command.
With the full backing of the National Assembly, the FRSC is stepping up its fight against fake number plates, emphasizing that collective action is crucial to maintaining public safety and security on Nigerian roads.
