LAFIA – Governor Abdullahi Sule has made a bold promise: Nasarawa State will be completely debt-free by the time he leaves office in 2027.

Speaking at an iftar gathering with journalists and commissioners at his residence in Lafia, the governor revealed that his administration has fully cleared all inherited debts, including bailout funds and economic stimulus packages received before he took office in 2019.

“We’ve paid off over N57 billion in liabilities without borrowing a dime,” Sule announced. “Now, our focus is on industrialization and security to transform Nasarawa’s future.”

Nasarawa’s Debt-Free Future: The Strategy

According to Sule, his administration has prioritized prudent financial management, allowing the state to fund ongoing projects without taking new loans.

The settled debts include:

Bailout funds & budget support loans received before 2019
N10 billion project support facility granted to states before he took office
An additional N137 million cleared from state coffers to wipe out remaining obligations

Infrastructure Boom: Major Projects Near Completion

Governor Sule also assured residents that key infrastructure projects were on track, including:
Lafia Flyover – ready in 3 weeks
Akwanga Flyover – to be completed by June
Keffi Overhead Bridge – newly approved, set for completion by December 2025

Despite some setbacks caused by contractors delaying projects, he emphasized that his administration remains steadfast in delivering on its promises.

A Secure & Industrialized Nasarawa

Sule reaffirmed that his long-term goal is to position Nasarawa as an industrial hub, leveraging its rich mineral resources while ensuring a safe and stable environment for businesses to thrive.

“We have avoided borrowing because we remain disciplined in managing our resources. With God’s help, I will leave Nasarawa stronger—financially stable and debt-free,” he concluded.

With just two years left in his tenure, can Governor Sule deliver on his promise? Nasarawa’s future is on the line.
