The Nigerian Defence Headquarters has strongly refuted claims that it condones misconduct among military personnel, following an alleged attack on an electricity Distribution Company (DisCo) by soldiers.

Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the Director of Defence Information, issued a statement clarifying that the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) does not tolerate indiscipline. He emphasized that standing Court Martials are in place to try any erring officers and that Military Police are actively investigating the incident.

The statement criticized a recent newspaper editorial for implying that the military leadership, including the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, has turned a blind eye to growing impunity among soldiers. The Defence Headquarters argued that such accusations are misleading and fail to recognize the military’s ongoing efforts to uphold accountability.

Gusau reaffirmed that disciplinary measures are always taken against misconduct, stressing that the AFN is committed to respecting citizens’ fundamental rights. He assured the public that military justice systems remain in place and that any officer found guilty of wrongdoing will face consequences.

The statement also urged the media to uphold ethical journalism by verifying facts before making sweeping claims about the military’s integrity.
