In a shocking turn of events, Tope Fasua, an economist and presidential aide to President Bola Tinubu, has deleted a Facebook post that labeled a Nigerian corps member, Ushie ‘Raye’ Uguamaye, a commercial sex worker. The post came after Ms. Uguamaye sharply criticized the president over his harsh economic policies, calling him the “most terrible” leader in Nigeria’s history.

Fasua, who previously gained attention for sharing a video of Ms. Uguamaye dining in a restaurant, made the inflammatory comment in a cryptic post on Tuesday. He insinuated that she was seeking a cut from Lagos’ infamous N661 billion spent on transactional sex. Fasua wrote, “Somebody who came to get her share from the N661 billion sub-sector that Lagos is famous for,” referencing a report that revealed that, in 2024, N661 billion was spent by men in Lagos on sexual satisfaction.

The post quickly drew the ire of Nigerians across social media, with many accusing Fasua of attempting to silence a female critic of the government. As the backlash intensified, Fasua pulled down the post, but not before receiving significant condemnation from users who felt his remarks were both sexist and defamatory.

One social media user, @TrendfusionNG, expressed outrage, calling Fasua’s actions a textbook example of toxic masculinity. “It’s disgraceful that an educated man like Tope Fasua would stoop so low as to label a young NYSC corps member with such demeaning words simply for criticizing bad governance,” the user wrote. Others joined in, accusing Fasua of trying to undermine women who speak up against the system by resorting to baseless and derogatory accusations.

“This is what happens when a woman dares to challenge the system—some insecure man resorts to making baseless accusations instead of addressing the real issues,” another Twitter user commented.

Adding to the controversy, Temitope Ajayi, another aide to President Tinubu, had earlier made waves by suggesting that Uguamaye, for calling the president a “terrible” leader, deserved to be executed by hanging or firing squad. Ajayi argued that while it’s normal for citizens to criticize public officials, a corps member violates their oath and should face “capital punishment” under the NYSC code.

With these incendiary remarks sparking nationwide outrage, Nigerians are once again questioning the treatment of those who dare to speak out against the government.
