Bayern Munich’s hopes of having Manuel Neuer back between the sticks have taken a hit, as the legendary goalkeeper has suffered a fresh setback in his recovery from a calf injury.

The 38-year-old shot-stopper, who initially tore his calf muscle while celebrating a goal during Bayern’s Champions League clash against Bayer Leverkusen in early March, had recently resumed training. However, his return was short-lived as he experienced a reaction in the muscle over the weekend, forcing him to step away from training once again.

With Bayern’s crucial Bundesliga fixture against St. Pauli on March 29 and their Champions League quarter-final battle against Inter Milan looming in April, Neuer’s availability is now in serious doubt.

This comes at a tricky time for Bayern, as backup goalkeeper Jonas Urbig is also sidelined with a foot injury. The Bavarian giants, however, still have experienced hands in Daniel Peretz and Sven Ulreich to fill the gap.

Despite this setback, Bayern remains in a strong position, sitting six points ahead of second-placed Leverkusen with just eight games left in the Bundesliga season.
