The Federal Government is set to clear 500 hectares of land in Benue State as part of its plan to boost ranching and dairy production, according to the Minister of Livestock Development, Alh. Idi Maiha.
During a visit to the Benue Livestock Investigation and Breeding Centre in Raav, Gwer East LGA, on Saturday, Maiha revealed that the government is committed to revitalizing livestock farming in the state. The centre, which spans 2,400 hectares, is currently underutilized, with only 37 animals and dilapidated facilities.
“We will form a committee to strategize on reviving this centre. Our goal is to establish two enterprises here—one for dairy and the other for ranching. We’ll start by clearing 500 hectares to grow pasture before the rains,” Maiha stated.
The Minister emphasized that new facilities such as isolation pens, maternity sections, dipping areas, and chalets would be introduced. He also disclosed that the centre will collaborate with Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi, for research purposes.
Dr. Aondoakaa Asambe, Director-General of the Benue Bureau for Livestock Development, praised the initiative, stating that ranching would help resolve security issues and allow farmers to return to their lands.
The visit also included stops at the Benue Swine and Crop Improvement Project in Yadev, Gboko LGA, and the International Cattle Market in Makurdi, signaling the FG’s broader commitment to livestock development in the region.
