Former President Goodluck Jonathan has cautioned that no country can prosper under a dictatorial government where power is abused and democratic institutions are weakened.

Speaking at the Haske Satumari Foundation’s Annual Colloquium in Abuja on Saturday, Jonathan pointed to the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State as a reflection of deeper governance failures across Nigeria. He criticized the executive, legislature, and judiciary for neglecting their duty to uphold justice and the rule of law.

“The key actors in Nigeria – from the executive to the legislature and judiciary – know the right thing to do, but they are refusing to do it. They are pretending to be asleep,” Jonathan stated.

He warned that a compromised judicial system discourages investment and economic growth, as investors will not risk their money in a country where court rulings can be dictated by politicians.

“If we truly want to build a nation where our children and grandchildren will be proud to live, we must strive to do what is right, no matter how painful it may be,” he urged.

The colloquium, aimed at amplifying marginalized voices and advocating for equitable governance, also featured discussions on systemic inequalities and the importance of inclusive leadership.

Other speakers echoed Jonathan’s sentiments, emphasizing that when those in power fail to uphold democratic values, the country’s future stability and prosperity are put at risk.
