The Nigerian film industry is in deep sorrow following the passing of veteran Nollywood actress Nkechi Nweje.
Her death was confirmed on Saturday by movie producer Stanley Ajemba, popularly known as Stanley Ontop, who shared the heartbreaking news on Instagram.
Ajemba, devastated by the loss, described Nweje as a vibrant and deeply cherished actress. Recalling their last conversation, he revealed how she had been a source of wisdom and encouragement.
“Nollywood in tears as we lost one of our vibrant Nollywood actresses, @nkechi.nweje, after a brief illness,” he wrote. “It still feels like a dream to me. Rest in peace, ma’am. My best friend, always calling to give me advice. The last time we spoke was during the Queen’s saga, and she said, ‘Ontop, stop.’ I’m still speechless.”
Veteran actress Rita Edochie also paid her respects by sharing a solemn candlelight tribute on Instagram, writing, “This world is really not our home.”
Actor Asa Ikuku joined in mourning the actress, saying, “Rest in peace, mummy Nkechi Nweje TV (Nwanyi Onitsha). You were truly a blessing to us. God knows best. We will miss you so much. Rest on, legend.”
Nkechi Nweje is survived by her husband, Dr. Azuibuike Nweje, and their six children.
Renowned for her compelling motherly roles, she leaves behind an unforgettable legacy in Nollywood, touching the hearts of many with her remarkable performances.
