A year after the heartbreaking boat accident that claimed the lives of Nollywood star Jnr Pope and four others, the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Delta State chapter, is set to honor their memory with a memorial service and a novelty march.
A source confirmed to Saturday Vanguard that a planning committee has been formed, with the memorial scheduled to take place at a Catholic church in Asaba, Delta State.
Meanwhile, the family of Olanti, a sound engineer who also perished in the tragedy, has spoken out, accusing film producer Adanma Luke of abandonment. Olanti’s father, Pastor Joseph Lazarus, revealed that since his son’s passing, Adanma Luke only sent ₦300,000 and has not reached out to the grieving family.
“She never visited or even sent a condolence message,” Pastor Lazarus lamented, adding that he has been struggling to pay his rent without his son, who was the family’s breadwinner.
The tragic incident, which occurred on April 10, 2024, when a boat carrying the cast and crew to a movie set capsized, sparked outrage and led to an investigation into safety measures on Nollywood productions. With emotions still raw a year later, the memorial aims to not only honor the victims but also serve as a reminder of the need for better safety standards in the industry.
