Christian Chukwugekwu Isiadinso, fondly known as Gekwu, was more than just a footballer—he was a midfield maestro who left an indelible mark on Nigerian football, especially with Enugu Rangers International.

Born and raised in the bustling neighborhood of Coal Camp, Enugu, Gekwu grew up in a football-loving community, living at No. 41 Abagana Street alongside his older brother, Osita Isiadinso, famously known as OC Mambo. From an early age, his passion for the game was evident, leading him to captain both the junior and senior teams of St. Peter’s Primary School, Coal Camp.

His football journey took him through Government College, Afikpo, and the prestigious Christ the King College (CKC) in Onitsha. At CKC, he was a standout talent, captaining both the junior and senior teams. Though he narrowly missed making the legendary CKC squad that won the World School Football Championship in Dublin, his skills on the pitch were undeniable.

Gekwu’s playing style, famously known as selense or don dirty, was unique—he was smooth, skillful, and effortlessly avoided physical confrontations on the field. His reputation as a midfield genius soon caught the attention of Enugu Rangers International, where he went on to captain the team and win multiple laurels. He earned the respect of fans and teammates, drawing comparisons to another Enugu Rangers legend, Chairman Christian Chukwu.

Playing for Rangers in those golden years was a badge of honor, bringing prestige and admiration. Gekwu, like many of his Coal Camp peers—including Chibo Ofordile (Owami), Okwuchukwu Obiora (Agarimojo), and Goddy Ben Ugwu (Surugede)—etched his name in Rangers’ history.

Beyond football, Gekwu found love with Cecilia Uju Egolum, a Coal Camp girl from Enugwu Ukwu. Their love story was one of deep connection—if it wasn’t Gekwu, it was nobody else. They eventually tied the knot, building a life together.

After hanging up his boots, Gekwu continued to serve his people, taking up a role as a Protocol Officer in the Anambra State Government House, while his wife worked at the Anambra State Broadcasting Service.

Now, as the football world mourns his passing, we celebrate the life of a true football icon. May his soul rest in peace.
