In a powerful message aimed at safeguarding citizens’ rights, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has issued a strict warning to officers of the Nigeria Police Force about the dangers of unlawful and prolonged detentions.

The IGP’s directive, made public through a statement signed by Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, stresses the need for police officers to adhere strictly to constitutional provisions regarding human rights. Egbetokun underscored that any officer found guilty of violating these provisions would face severe consequences.

Released on Sunday, the statement titled “Human Rights: IGP Warns Personnel Against Incessant, Unlawful Detentions,” comes in response to mounting public concern over arbitrary arrests and extended detentions. Egbetokun reaffirmed the police leadership’s commitment to upholding due process, ensuring that detentions remain within the legally allowed periods.

The IGP emphasized that following the law is not only an obligation but a vital part of protecting the dignity and freedom of individuals, as outlined in Sections 34 and 35 of Nigeria’s Constitution. Egbetokun pointed out that unlawful detentions erode public trust in the police force, further vowing that any officer found violating these principles would face disciplinary action.

The IGP also called for a culture of accountability within the police, urging officers to conduct themselves with integrity in their interactions with the public. He reiterated the police force’s commitment to building stronger relationships with the communities they serve by prioritizing human rights.

This proactive stance signals a broader vision for the Nigeria Police Force—a force that is not only effective in maintaining law and order but also fiercely dedicated to respecting human rights and the dignity of every individual.

As Nigerians continue to demand justice and accountability, Egbetokun’s message serves as a clear reminder of the Force’s responsibility to uphold the law while protecting the rights of all citizens in their custody.
