In a dramatic turn of events, the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has confirmed the recapture of five out of the twelve inmates who escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Koton-Karfe, Kogi State, following a bold prison break on Monday morning.
The incident unfolded when a group of inmates managed to manipulate padlocks in one section of the facility, allowing them to flee. In response to the escape, the Acting Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, quickly mobilized a coordinated effort with heads of security agencies and Kogi State’s Senior Special Assistant to the Governor. The authorities immediately deployed personnel to secure the facility and initiated a manhunt for the remaining escapees.
Five Escapees Recaptured, Seven Still at Large
According to NCoS spokesperson Abubakar Umar, five of the twelve escaped prisoners have been successfully recaptured, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining seven. The NCoS assures the public that every resource is being utilized to track down the escapees and bring them back into custody.
“The Acting Controller General of Corrections has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the escape,” the statement reads. “A security audit is also being conducted across all correctional facilities nationwide to prevent such incidents in the future.”
Strengthening Security Measures Across the Nation
In the wake of the escape, the NCoS is taking immediate steps to bolster security at custodial centres across Nigeria. Authorities are calling on the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to help locate the remaining escapees.
The NCoS’s response highlights the importance of security improvements in preventing future prison breaks and ensuring the safety of correctional facilities nationwide. As the manhunt continues, the nation remains on alert, with hopes of swiftly bringing all the escapees to justice.
