Organized Labour in Rivers State has issued a stern warning, threatening strategic actions if the recently declared State of Emergency by President Bola Tinubu is not reversed. The union condemned the declaration, citing its detrimental impact on local workers, including the non-payment of salaries for Local Government Council employees.

In a strongly worded statement released in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, the union leaders, Alex Agwanwor, Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ikechukwu Onyefuru, Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), and Chuku Emecheta, Chairman of the Joint Negotiating Council, outlined their concerns and grievances regarding the state of emergency and its consequences.

The statement reads in part: “Rivers State Organised Labour expresses deep concern over the state of emergency declaration in Rivers State by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on March 18, 2025. We strongly condemn this premature and baseless declaration and the suspension of elected officials, including the Governor, Deputy Governor, and House of Assembly members chosen by the people of Rivers.”

The union highlighted that the state of emergency has resulted in widespread hardship, especially for local government workers who have not been paid their salaries, leaving them vulnerable to financial instability. Additionally, the statement expressed concern about the broader economic impact on Rivers State, a critical region in Nigeria’s economy and the Niger Delta.

It further warned: “Given the strategic importance of Rivers State, the state of emergency threatens to worsen the economic climate. At a time when the nation is grappling with inflation, naira devaluation, high unemployment, and rising costs of living, this emergency could undermine the state’s economy and discourage potential investors.”

The statement also pointed out that the move has already had a negative effect on local businesses and investment opportunities, as potential investors have withdrawn from the “New Rivers Vision” initiative, stalling the state’s progress and affecting its internally generated revenue.

The Organised Labour is now appealing to President Tinubu, the National Assembly, and the Judiciary to urgently reverse the state of emergency and restore the elected officials to their positions. The union has also called for open dialogue to resolve the issues peacefully, warning that if their demands are not met, they may be forced to take action that could disrupt national economic activities.

The statement concluded by reiterating the union’s commitment to law and order, but emphasized that the suspension of elected officials and the imposition of a state of emergency must be in accordance with the Nigerian Constitution. The union also called for prioritizing citizens’ welfare, including ensuring the timely payment of salaries and the safety of workers.

While awaiting a resolution, the union has urged workers to remain calm and continue their duties.

As tensions rise, all eyes are on the government’s next move and whether Labour will follow through on their threat of disruptive action if their demands are not met.
