A shocking jailbreak rocked the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Koton Karfe, Kogi State, as 12 inmates staged a daring escape in the early hours of Monday. While five of the fugitives have been recaptured, authorities are still on a frantic manhunt for the remaining seven.
The Kogi State Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, confirmed the incident, describing it as “unfortunate” while commending the swift response of security agencies. The Federal Government has since launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the escape.
How Did They Escape?
According to reports, the inmates managed to manipulate the facility’s padlocks and fled without causing any major structural damage—raising serious concerns about potential internal sabotage.
“The theory that the inmates escaped through the tower without any visible damage is puzzling. This calls for a thorough investigation to uncover what really happened and whether there were accomplices within the system,” Fanwo stated.
Government Reacts, Promises Swift Action
Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has vowed that no stone will be left unturned in the quest to re-arrest the fugitives. He has also directed the Acting Controller-General of Prisons, Sylvester Nwakuche, to personally assess the facility and conduct a full security audit across correctional centers nationwide.
“We are leveraging biometric data and advanced surveillance technology to track down the escapees. The safety of our custodial centers is a top priority, and measures are being reinforced to prevent future breaches,” the minister assured.
Public Urged to Assist Security Agencies
Authorities have called on the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity that could aid in the re-arrest of the fleeing inmates.
“There’s no cause for panic. We urge citizens to go about their daily activities as normal while remaining security-conscious,” Fanwo added.
As investigations continue, the nation watches closely, wondering—was this just a security lapse, or is there a deeper conspiracy behind the Kogi jailbreak?
