Nigerian football legend Segun Odegbami believes Super Eagles’ star striker Victor Osimhen has what it takes to shatter Rashidi Yekini’s long-standing goal record.

Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Lagos, Odegbami praised Osimhen’s incredible goal-scoring prowess after the Napoli forward surpassed his own 44-year-old record as Nigeria’s second-highest goal scorer.

Osimhen secured his new spot on the leaderboard with a stunning brace in the Super Eagles’ 2-0 victory over Rwanda in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, bringing his international tally to 25 goals. That puts him just 12 goals behind the late, legendary Rashidi Yekini, who still holds the all-time record with 37 goals.

Odegbami’s Take on Osimhen’s Potential

Odegbami, who was known as Mathematical during his playing days, acknowledged that his own record—and Yekini’s—had stood for too long, urging young strikers to step up their game.

“Osimhen is a pure goal poacher. He doesn’t focus on showboating or dribbling—he just gets the job done. He’s always in the right place at the right time, and that’s what makes him dangerous,” Odegbami said.

With Osimhen still in his prime, Odegbami believes the record is within reach.

“If he stays consistent and injury-free, I have no doubt he can break Yekini’s record. He has the years ahead of him, and I wish him the best of luck.”

With 12 more goals to go, can Osimhen etch his name in history as Nigeria’s all-time top scorer? Time will tell, but the chase is officially on!
