A romantic night turned into a heartbreaking tragedy in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, as a young couple lost their lives after inhaling toxic fumes from a power generator.

The lovers, identified as a man and a woman simply known as Peace, reportedly placed their generator near their room on Friday night, unknowingly setting the stage for a fatal accident.

By Saturday morning, their absence raised suspicion among neighbors, who decided to check on them. When repeated knocks went unanswered, they forced the door open—only to find the lifeless bodies of the couple inside.

A local resident, Chima, recounted how shocked neighbors rushed to report the incident at the Central Police Station.

Spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Superintendent Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the tragic event, stating that preliminary investigations suggest carbon monoxide poisoning from the generator fumes as the likely cause of death.

This unfortunate incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of improper generator use, highlighting the need for greater awareness on ventilation and safety precautions.
