The Abia State Government, in collaboration with UN-Habitat, is taking bold steps to reshape Aba, the state’s commercial heartbeat, with a long-overdue master plan designed to bring order, growth, and sustainability to the city.
At a workshop organized by the Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA) and UN-Habitat, GADA’s Director General, Architect Uche Ukeje, emphasized that the success of the master plan depends on accurate data. “Without reliable data, planning is bound to fail,” he warned, stressing that the new blueprint will dictate the location of schools, hospitals, markets, and infrastructure for the next 30 years.
UN-Habitat’s team lead, Mr. Paul Okunlola, highlighted Aba’s pressing need for urban restructuring, noting that congestion and poor planning are stifling its economic potential. “Aba can be a major engine for regional growth if properly planned,” he stated.
The master plan, set for submission by June 2025, will provide a roadmap for the government to prioritize key development projects while securing funding from global financial institutions like the World Bank and the African Development Bank.
With this initiative, the dream of a well-structured, sustainable, and thriving Aba is finally within reach.
