The Ogun State government has confirmed an outbreak of Lassa fever following the death of a 25-year-old National Youth Corps member who contracted the virus.

According to the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, the deceased had fallen ill in Ondo State before being transferred to a hospital in Ijebu North, where she tragically passed away on March 18, 2025.

In response, the state’s Ministry of Health and Rapid Response Team have ramped up surveillance, community engagement, and mobilization to prevent further spread.

Dr. Coker warned that Lassa fever, a severe viral disease, presents with symptoms such as high fever, sore throat, headaches, nausea, vomiting, and, in extreme cases, unexplained bleeding. She urged residents to seek medical attention if fever symptoms persist beyond 48 hours despite malaria or antibiotic treatment.

Healthcare facilities have also been directed to enforce strict infection control measures, while health workers are advised to report suspected cases immediately.

The commissioner reassured residents that the government remains committed to public health safety and advised the public to prioritize hygiene, avoid contact with rodents, and report any suspected cases without delay.
