Tennis star Iga Swiatek is now under heightened security at the Miami Open following a disturbing encounter with a persistent harasser during her practice session.
Reports indicate that the individual, known for repeated online attacks against Swiatek, verbally harassed her on Sunday, prompting swift action from tournament organizers and the WTA.
“Security is a top priority,” a spokesperson for Swiatek stated. “Criticism is one thing, but threats and disturbances are unacceptable. We appreciate the tournament’s immediate response and additional precautions.”
The Miami Open reaffirmed its commitment to player safety, while the WTA opted not to comment directly, deferring to tournament organizers.
This incident comes just weeks after British player Emma Raducanu faced a stalker at the Dubai Open, highlighting ongoing security concerns in women’s tennis.
Swiatek, who secured a victory against Elina Svitolina on Monday, is set to face Alexandra Eala in the quarter-finals on Wednesday. Meanwhile, fans and officials alike emphasize the need for stronger measures to protect athletes from such harassment.
