KANO – As Kano State braces for a potential showdown over the controversial parallel Sallah Durbar celebrations, the state’s Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, has assured residents of tight security measures to prevent any breakdown of law and order.

The assurance comes amid growing concerns that rival celebrations could escalate tensions and spark violent clashes. Speaking during a meeting with the Kano State Coalition of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), CP Bakori emphasized that the command is working closely with other security agencies to ensure a hitch-free celebration.

“In light of the current security concerns, we are aware that certain groups are planning to hold separate Sallah Durbar celebrations, which could lead to heightened tension. The police command, in collaboration with other security agencies, is taking strategic steps to maintain peace and order,” CP Bakori stated.

He urged Kano residents to prioritize peace and unity during the festivities, calling on community and religious leaders to play their part in de-escalating tensions.

The visit by the NGOs and PCRC was prompted by fears that the parallel durbars—one reportedly being organized by the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, under the directive of Governor Abba Yusuf, and another by the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero—could trigger unrest.

CP Bakori reassured the public that security forces are on high alert and urged residents to report any suspicious activities. “We must put aside our differences and come together for the progress of our state and the nation,” he added.

The coming days will be crucial in determining whether Kano’s Sallah Durbar will be a celebration of culture or a battleground for royal rivalry.
